Secret Tells Of A Professional Organizer On What Your Package- Opening Style Reveals About You

I’ve been a professional organizer for over 12 years and I find that there are two types of package openers. Read on to discover what your opening style says about you.

The “Rip and Run” Approach

Picture this: You’ve just gotten home from work, and there on your doorstep is a glorious package, shimmering with the promise of new goodies.

You grab your keys, snatch it up, and… unleash your inner wolverine. Cardboard shreds fly, packing peanuts scatter like confetti, and within seconds, you’re holding your new treasure aloft in victory.

Sound familiar? If you’re a “rip and run” kind of package opener, you’re definitely not alone.

This approach might mean you’re a go-getter who values efficiency above all else. You’re always on the move, eager to get to the good stuff, and you don’t have time for dilly-dallying.

But here’s the thing: this same “get it done” attitude might also be contributing to the clutter in your home.

Are you so focused on acquiring new things that you forget to let go of the old? Do those piles of boxes and packaging materials start to resemble a small mountain range in your living room?

If so, don’t worry! There’s hope for even the most enthusiastic package rippers.

By channeling that energy into a few simple decluttering strategies, you can transform your home into a relaxing, peaceful state. (And who knows, you might even discover a newfound appreciation for the zen art of carefully opening packages.)

The “Methodical Mastermind”

Ah, the methodical mastermind. You approach a package with the precision of a surgeon and the patience of a saint.

Every step is deliberate: carefully slicing the tape, gently unfolding the cardboard, and carefully sorting the packing materials. You might even have a designated spot for storing those packing peanuts, just in case you need them later.  (Hey, you never know!)

This thoughtful approach likely extends to other areas of your life.

You probably have a to-do list for your to-do list, color-coded labels on your spice rack, and a sock drawer that would make Marie Kondo proud.

But even the most organized among us can get overwhelmed by clutter. Perhaps you’ve inherited a collection of family heirlooms you don’t know what to do with, or maybe your love of books has turned your living room into a mini-library.

Whatever the case, it’s easy for those carefully organized systems to start to crumble under the weight of too much stuff.

The good news is, your methodical nature is a fantastic asset when it comes to decluttering.

You’re naturally inclined to create systems and routines, which are essential for maintaining an organized home.

With a little guidance and a sprinkle of that signature patience, you can conquer the clutter and create a space that’s both beautiful and functional.

Think of it as the ultimate organizing puzzle – one that you’re perfectly equipped to solve.

The “Hesitant Helper”

Now, let’s talk about those of you who approach a package with the same caution you might use when defusing a bomb.

You gingerly circle it, inspecting every angle, and maybe even give it a little shake to see if anything rattles inside.

Scissors in hand, you make a tentative snip, then pause, as if waiting for the contents to leap out and surprise you.

Sound about right? If you’re a hesitant helper, you might be a naturally cautious person who prefers to assess a situation before diving in.

You’re not one for impulsive decisions, and you’d rather take your time than risk making a mistake.  (Hey, there’s nothing wrong with a little healthy caution!)

This careful approach can be a great asset when it comes to decluttering.

You’re likely to think things through before getting rid of them, ensuring you don’t accidentally toss something you’ll later regret.

But sometimes, that hesitation can turn into procrastination, leading to piles of unopened boxes and a growing sense of overwhelm.

The key for you, my friend, is to channel that cautious energy into making informed decisions.

Take a deep breath, trust your gut, and don’t be afraid to ask for help if you’re feeling stuck.  Remember, decluttering is a journey, not a race, and every small step you take is a victory.

The “Sentimental Saver”

Every ribbon, every scrap of tissue paper, every little sticker… you cherish it all.

You might have a drawer overflowing with gift bags and bows, or maybe your closet houses a collection of shoeboxes that rivals a department store.

You’re the kind of person who sees potential in everything, and you can’t bear to part with anything that might have a future use (or just a fond memory attached to it).

But even the most sentimental among us need to set boundaries.

That birthday card from your third-grade crush? It’s okay to let it go.  Those wine corks from that unforgettable vacation? Maybe it’s time to create a shadow box instead of filling a whole bin.

By selectively choosing what to keep and what to let go of, you can honor those memories without letting them take over your home. Remember, it’s the sentiment, not the stuff, that truly matters.

Wrapping It Up (Pun Intended!)

Of course, these are just a few examples, and everyone has their own unique way of opening a package. But I’ve found that paying attention to these little details can give me valuable insights into my clients’ personalities and preferences.

So the next time you receive a package, take a moment to notice how you open it. You might be surprised at what it reveals about you!

And if you’re ready to tackle the clutter that’s hiding inside those packages (and the rest of your home), give me a call. I’d love to help you create a space that feels as good as opening your favorite package!
